When investigators finally started following Philip Markoff and his fiancee Megan McAllister,

they would note that their relationship seemed one-sided.

In doing mundane chores like going to the grocery store, Megan doted on Philip while he was focused on the task at hand.

She was always touching him and she was quick to laugh while he was not. He seemed distant or distracted. Police watched Philip work on Megan's

car in their apartment complex parking lot. One officer noted that when Megan just

came out to visit him and see how it was going,

quote, she looked like she was living in a fairy tale.

She was in love and it showed, even in the most simple of interactions.

While Philip would have good reason to be distracted or distant

when the police were watching them,

the small glimpse into their relationship

did represent the couple's dynamic, even if Megan didn't know it yet.

It was April of 2009 when police took an interest in Philip and Megan, and the two had been together since late 2005 at that point.

They'd met volunteering at an emergency room.

Megan was a senior in college, Philip, a sophomore,

and both had their sights set on the medical field.

Their lives were busy when they met and they stayed even busier when they graduated.

Megan had lifelong back problems and surgery that did not go as hoped ended up complicating

things. She put off applying to medical or grad school and couldn't work for a long

time. Meanwhile, Philip graduated from the State University of New York in Albany in 2007, a year after her,

earning his undergrad in just three years.

He applied to and was accepted to the medical school at Boston University.
