Welcome back everyone to 1001 Stories for the Road and Chapter 8 of the Count of Monte Cristo.

I'll give you a little bit of the summary.

Dante's has been questioned by Villaforte.

At first, Villaforte seemed to be supporting his story.

But at the very end, when he was just about to release Dantes, he asked to see the letter that was in the packet that had been entrusted to Dantes.

And upon reading the letter, his face turned white. And then he ordered the gendarmes to assist Dantes out of the room.

Gendarms moved Dantes to a small jail on the mainland, where Dantes expect, per Villefort's word,

that he will be released the next morning after the matter of supposed crimes is cleared up.

Late that night, however,

gendarmes returned and move Dantes out of the jail and to the port,

then onto a small boat, which the gendarmes row.

Dantes asks where they're going,

but the gendarmes say they could tell Dantes nothing.

After they row out into the port's waters a fair distance, Dante's begs them to tell him

what's going on, since he thought that he was going to be set pre. The men admit that he is not

being set pre, but instead taken to the dreaded chateau-deep, an impregnable fortress prison on an

island out in the far waters off Marseille. Hearing this, Dante's tries to leap out of the boat to escape, but the police subdue him

and drag him inside.

And now, Chapter 8 of the Count of Monte Cristo.

The commissary of police, as he traversed the antechamber, made a sign to the two gendarmes,

who placed themselves one on
