All right, first episode of the new year. So, Garen, what are we going to be talking about today?

The cost of racism. Okay. What is it? First, I want to preface before we get into it. In this episode, we're going to be talking about how racism harms all of us, including white people. And part of it, we're going to talk about the ways that it harms the black community, but we're also going to talk about how it hurts the white community. And I just

want to preface by stating in a deliberate, compelling way that the reason to avoid racism is not

because it costs you as a white person. It's because you exist to love people. We are called to love people. That's why we are here is to love,

and that love benefits all of us. But the root of it is love and concern for others, not just

self-interest. One of the criticisms that the critical race theory makes of white people is that historically there's this

accusation that white people have only responded and pushed back against racism in ways that

fit with our own self-interest. And that is largely true. I don't think it's entirely true. I think there's times where you can look at

history and see white people in, you know, the underground railroad or some of the white pastors who came and

suffered in the civil rights marches, where you can see that they weren't operating in their own

self-interest. But I think that the broader white culture generally has backed away from racism. And we've talked about this in
