Summary

O.Henry wrote this classic tale of fall in New York City in 1905 from the viewpoint of a homeless man named Soapy, who, after feeling the first cold winds of winter coming, realizes that its time to get arrested so he can spend the winter in jail at Blackwell's Island. great short story from O'Henry called The Cop in the Anthem. Like many of O'Henry's stories, this

one takes us to New York City around 1900,

and this one has a great plot twist as well.

You'll be meeting a homeless man called Soapy, who is occupying a park bench in the late fall, realizing that colder weather is coming

and he needs a place he can count on that offers a bed and three squares a day.

For that he knows he can always rely on Blackwell's Island, the city's jail, so he makes up his mind to get himself arrested.

On his bench in Madison Square, Soapy moved uneasily.
