Welcome to our Rosary meditation.

So let's begin in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

And let's call to mind all those that we've promised to pray for.

One of the most powerful stories of conversion through the prayer and sacrifice of another

is to be found in St. Maxillian Colby.

I'm going to share a story from his life I'm pretty sure you've never heard.

But first, just a little on Colby.

On May 28, 1941, Maximilian Colby was taken to Auschwitz. In Auschwitz, the rule was every man for himself, survival

or the fittest. But Colby lived differently. Colby lived sacrificial love.

And Colby seemed never to think of himself.

When food was brought in, everyone struggled to get his place

to be sure of a share. But Colby, he stood aside, so that frequently

there was none left for him. He was once asked whether such self-denial made sense in a place where every man was engaged in a struggle for survival.

And Colby answered,

Every man has an aim in life.

For most men, it is to return home to their wives and families or to their

mothers. For my part I give my life for the good of all men. And prisoners recounted that they would come to Colby with their fears saying,

Father, I can't endure this place any longer. Colby encouraged them saying,

Place yourself under the protection of Mary,

just as a child trustingly holds his mother's hand.

So you, too, must be calm and peaceful,

for the Virgin Mary has you under her protection.
