The your an imposter mantra is a beautiful oft repeated phrase from one's inner critic.

But there are a lot of other phrases that the inner critic uses. So it's kind of a subset of this self-loathing that goes on.

And I think you correctly linked it to the kind of merging of sense of self and self-worth

with work. But I would argue it's even deeper.

It's merging a sense of self and a sense of self worth

with almost anything that's extrinsic to this meat bag called me.

One of the more profound teachings from Buddhism is that it basically goes like this,

you are lovable, you are worthy, not because of anything that you have done, but simply because you exist.

And to my mind, that flies in the face of almost every Western philosophical tradition that I was ever raised with,

which was that salvation and everlasting peace, a kind of equanimity, that I am okay.

I suffer and I'm okay. I'm in pain and I'm okay I'm happy and I'm okay I'm sad and I'm okay

that kind of equanimity is only available to us in the hereafter and only available to people who either have been

chosen preordained by God or someone lucky enough to have figured out what the right things to do are.
