Summary

Women's rights activist, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, became the center a media firestorm last week, when Brandies University reversed its decision to grant her an honorary degree. While they commend her for being "a compelling public figure and advocate for women’s rights," many of her past statements against Islam have offended students and faculty at the Massachusetts institution. In this podcast, we hear some of these past statements in the form of an Intelligence Squared U.S. debate from 2010, where she argued against the motion, Islam is a Religion of Peace. http://intelligencesquaredus.org/debates/past-debates/item/573-islam-is-a-religion-of-peace Learn more about your ad choices. Hello, I'm John Donvan, host and moderator of Intelligent Squared U.S. In this special

0:06.0

podcast, we're turning our attention to one of our former panelists, Ion Hershey Ali,

0:12.0

who became the center of a media firestorm this week when Brandeis University reversed

0:16.8

its decision to grant her an honorary degree. The school also revoked its invitation for

0:21.4

her to speak at the upcoming commencement ceremony. Ali was born in Somalia to a Muslim

0:26.8

family, and she is now an activist and writer. She is revered by women's rights advocates,

0:32.5

but her outspokeness against Islam offended many in the Brandeis community. The university

0:38.3

said in a statement, quote, she is a compelling public figure and advocate for women's rights

0:43.5

and we respect and appreciate her work to protect and defend the rights of women and girls

0:47.9

throughout the world that said, we cannot overlook certain of her past statements that

0:52.7

are inconsistent with Brandeis University's core values. Well, what are some of those statements?

0:59.5

We can hear some of them in the Intelligent Squared U.S. debate from October 6, 2010, where

1:04.9

she spoke against the motion Islam is a religion of peace. We will also hear from her opponents

1:11.3

in the debate. First, here is Ion Hershey Ali arguing in her opening statement that Islam

1:17.2

is inherently a religion of conflict. And you look at a religion like Islam on an intellectual

1:24.4

level, it was expressed by the founder of Islam as a demolition of all other gods. From

1:32.2

those of you who are familiar with history, you know that no monotheistic religion can be

1:38.8

a religion of peace. Monotheistic religions know periods, lengthy periods of peace, but

1:45.7

they also know lengthy periods of war. The founder of Islam, Muhammad, in his lifetime

1:51.9

conducted 65 campaigns of war that were all successful. That history of militarism, combined

2:00.8

with the legacy of empire, those two points alone belive the motion tonight that Islam

2:08.6

is a religion of peace. But that's not all. When empires decline, those who are defeated
