In the 1980s, a former U.S. Army Green Beret and Iowa farmer moved his family to northern Idaho,

seeking solace in an existence far

away from what he deemed to be a wickedly corrupt society ruled by a tyrannical government.

Neither a radical Nazi nor a bloodthirsty revolutionary, the man simply wanted to live a quiet

Christian life without the oppression of what he saw as the dictates of a degenerate society.

The man, Randy Weaver, would eventually be pressured by an undercover ATF agent posing as a local

resident into sawing off a shotgun for him. When the federal agent confronted him, Weaver was

given the option to inform on his neighbors in exchange for a dismissal of charges.

When he refused to serve as a snitch, Weaver was arrested in January of 1991.

He was ordered to appear in court, but was given the wrong court date.

A year passed, and the ATF transferred the case to the U.S. Marshals,

who were then tasked with bringing Weaver in.

The Marshall set up 24-hour surveillance on the Weaver's property on Ruby Ridge,

tracking their every move and detailing their daily routines.

On August 21, 1992, when the Marshals were scouting in the woods,

the Weaver's dog started barking at them.

Thinking a predator was near, the weavers moved into the woods with firearms.

At that point, a federal agent shot and killed the dog.

And when the weavers and their friend Kevin Harris heard the shots, they hurried in that direction.

When Harris saw men in army fatigues and gildy suits on the property,

he opened fire, killing U.S. Marshal William Deegan. As Marshall's returned fire,
