What do you do when a stranger not set your door?

On August 23, 2008, a young woman had to make that very decision,

thus beginning a series of events that would end in her murder. So if you like your coffee

hot, but your bones chilled, sit back and start your day with a morning cup of murder. Kika Powell was born on January 31, 1980, and was described by those who loved her as

fun, feisty, and incredibly ambitious.

After graduating from Largo High School in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Kinnika enlisted in the

U.S. Army, completely surprising her family and friends,

and began serving in Korea for the next several years. Despite being so far away, though,

she worked hard to maintain her close relationships with her loved ones. In 2004, she left the military

and came back to Prince George's County,

where she took a job at John Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel.

Because of the lab's work on Homeland Security projects, the exact nature of Kanika's job was unknown,

but she seemed to be thriving on this new path that she

was taking. It was a dream job for her, having always wanted to work in national security,

and at just 28 years old, she had already accomplished so much and had even more on the horizon, all of which came to a crashing

halt on August 23, 2008, when a strange knock on her door set the wheels in motion that
