Summary

The New Discourses Podcast with James Lindsay, Ep. 180 After a long wait, we return to finish our exploration (https://newdiscourses.com/2025/07/the-communist-manifesto-volume-one/) of The Communist Manifesto (pdf: https://newdiscourses.com/2025/07/the-communist-manifesto-volume-one/) here on the New Discourses Podcast. In this episode, host James Lindsay takes you through the last chapter of the Manifesto itself and then continues to "The Principles of Communism," which Friedrich Engels wrote, originally as a "Communist Confession of Faith" in 1847, a year before the Manifesto was published with Karl Marx. He and Marx wrote it for the Communist League, which is given as an offshoot of the League of the Just, a revolutionary secret society made up of scattered French radicals and the remnant-in-exile of the Bavarian Illuminati. Join James for this clear look into the foundations of organized Communism and the principles upon which it was organized. Latest from New Discourses Press! Hey everybody, it's James Lindsay, and you are listening to the New Discourses podcast,

0:23.9

and it's time we go back and finish the long promised other part of my miniature series on the Communist Manifesto.

0:33.9

So if you recall in the previous episode of this two-part mini-series, I read chapters one and two, along with the preface to the Communist Manifesto.

0:44.2

And then I said that chapter three is a bunch of basically kind of annoying junk where Karl Marx complains about other kinds of communism.

0:53.1

But then there's this other document that's in my copy of the Communist Manifesto called

0:58.0

The Principles of Communism, that's like a 25 point FAQ, frequently asked questions, kind of document.

1:07.0

Except that's not actually what it is.

1:09.0

What it actually is is where Frédéric Ingalls was writing his program for the Communist League

1:15.9

before the Communist Manifesto came out, which was actually originally written as a kind of confession of faith, so to speak.

1:24.7

In fact, the communist confession of faith.

1:26.5

And he and Marx discussed that

1:29.9

that was inappropriate in late 1847, the Communist Manifesto coming out in 1848, and delivering it as a

1:38.9

kind of catechism, as it were, would not be the right way to go. And instead, they published it as a manifesto. And then

1:48.5

in this copy of the manifesto, this actual original principles of communism document is included.

1:54.3

Turns out there's also a fourth chapter to the actual body of the Communist manifesto as well. That's two pages. It's very short.

2:04.1

And so I'm going to go through that fourth chapter of the manifesto now, and then the principles of

2:09.9

communism as promised. So chapter four of the Communist Manifesto, position of the communists

2:17.2

in relation to the various

2:18.8

existing opposition parties.

2:21.3

And what you're going to hear is that this isn't that far off from the end of the

2:26.7

principles of communism.

2:28.5

When we get there, he says Section 2 has made clear the relations of the communists to the
