Summary

It’s our final book club of the year! Today we’re talking about The Cloisters by Katy Hays. We chat about which plot twists we saw coming in this atmospheric mystery (and which surprised us!), and also dive into our love for the historical mystery embedded in this book, which led us to talk about our feelings on historical fiction in general. Plus, we’re sharing our own personal clairvoyant experiences.

If you liked this book, you may enjoy The Secret History by Donna Tartt, Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo, and A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness.

Hi everyone, welcome back to Bad on Paper Podcast. I'm Becca Freeman and I'm Olivia

0:21.7

Mentor. And today is our November book club or final book club of the year and we're

0:26.5

talking about the cloister by Katie Hayes. I can't believe this is our final book club.

0:31.9

I feel like we just started doing this. I know. Well, you've earned a break. We get December

0:37.3

book club off. It's going to be a weird feeling, but I'm looking forward to next year already.

0:42.7

Me too. Before we talk about the book, should we do some highs and lows? Yeah, talk to me about

0:48.3

your high. I think we're in the same boat this week that our high and our low is the same.

0:53.4

I saw them. Not the same as each others, but like the high and the low are both the same thing.

0:59.6

When I looked at the outline, I was like, we look a little on hinge.

1:02.6

Truly. The repetitiveness. Truly. But I want to hear more. So my both my high and my low is book edits.

1:12.4

It's my high because it's going. I feel like since we recorded last week, it's gotten faster.

1:17.6

I'm getting into a groove. I've picked up speed and momentum. So that's great. I'm also just

1:23.6

trying to remind myself about how lucky I am that this isn't something that should feel bad,

1:30.6

even though it's hard. I'm so lucky to get to do this. This is the fulfillment of a dream that I've

1:35.9

had, whether I've realized it fully or not since I was a child. So it's a high that I get to be

1:44.0

doing this. I feel more positive about it than I did last week. It's a low because it's hard,

1:48.9

man. It's hard and it's fast and it's scary. I'm starting to get the, is it good enough? What

1:58.0

will people say on good reads type feelings are like sneaking in? Because before I was able to

2:03.0

tell myself, well, am I not even so? Nobody's going to even read it. So that was my big fear. But

2:07.7

I'm like, what are other people going to say? So it's a high and a low. I have a week and a half

2:15.0

left on my deadline. So I'm going. I think that's all that matters. As long as you're making forward

2:20.9

progress, you're being consistent. I mean, you know, anything worth doing is going to be hard
