We live in an age of, as C.S. Lewis put it, chronological snobbery.

Modern man pretends he's different. He's progressed, evolved, move beyond the old ways.

We imagine ourselves as enlightened, rational people, too enlightened to dance around bonfires or offer sacrifices to control the weather.

We scoff at the

ancient farmer praying for rain or the druid reading omens in the clouds that

was primitive superstitious backwards we've simply traded goats and human

sacrifice for carbon credits and druids for Davos technocrats the The rituals are cleaner, the altars digital, the priests dressed in lab coats,

but the religion is just as real, just as superstitious, and just as controlling.

Our modern secular scientific eschatology is one where priests of progress preach fire and ice in alternating decades,

and the only salvation, total state control.

Despite the hubris of modernity, the 19th and 20th centuries was not an age of rational calm and never-ending progress.

It was an age of unrest, and never-ending progress. It was an age of unrest.

Revolutions, world wars, industrial upheaval, and the death of God in the public square

cracked open the soul of the West and led to a massive identity crisis. And from that fracture

poured new prophets with old fears, apocalyptic seers proclaiming the end

of the world, not by angels or trumpets, but by man and industry.

The religions differed, but their eschatology was always the same.

Doom is coming, and only total transformation of your behavior, your consumptions, your every

way of life can save you.

Became preaching fear, and sadly fear still reigns.

But, as it turns out, their prophecies have been wrong. Spectacularly wrong.
