This is Erica and Rumblestrip and this is a short special show.

Earlier this month we had a really terrible flood here in Vermont. A lot of roads were washed out

and houses were destroyed and whole towns were underwater. It was really, really bad.

And Hardwick got hit pretty hard.

And this all happened exactly a week after I launched the last show, which is about the Mystery Dinner

Theater show in Hardwick that was put on by the Civic Standard.

As soon as the flood started, the Civic started working with a town and with organizations all over town to set up a

shelter up at Hazen Union High School and provide meals and organized volunteers.

Today they will be working with volunteers again to help people shovel mud out of their

basements and tonight they'll be running a trivia night at the diner and next week karaoke

at the Legion they are doing something that is so simple and so

fundamental but also incredibly rare and it makes the hair on my neck stand up to hear them talk about it.

So anyway, I stopped in and talked with them yesterday about the flood response

and I wanted to share it with you here.

businesses, organizations, the town itself, intentionally in order to create community, and suddenly there

was an absolute need for those connections to be utilized quickly, phone call, text, to get really

big things organized for the days ahead. And so those connections that we have been sort of intentionally

creating made a big difference when they were needed so so much.
