| 0:34.6 | They were motivated by a fanaticism and the need to finance their journey to the Holy |

| 0:39.5 | Although the crusade had been called by the Pope, all the attacks on the Jews were condemned |
| 0:43.6 | by the Church hierarchy. |
| 0:45.0 | Some bishops offered Jews refuge in surrounding cities, others sheltered them in their own |
| 0:49.2 | palaces, though not always successfully. |
| 0:51.7 | And others bought off the marauding crusaders with silver. |
| 0:55.8 | After the first crusades, Pope Gregory X and Benedict XIII declared that Jews were not |
| 1:01.0 | enemies of Christians, and that their lives and property were to be respected. |
| 1:05.0 | In his preaching during the Second Crusade, Bernard of Clare Vaux explicitly condemned |
| 1:09.0 | the attacks on the Jews that happened during the first crusade. |
| 1:12.2 | Later, when the Black Death struck Europe, rumors began to circulate that the disease |
| 1:16.5 | was called by Jews poisoning the wells of Christians on orders from a Spanish rabbi. |
