This is bird note. The once thought to be a subspecies of the eastern meadowlark,

0:08.9

this bird was recognized in 2022 as a separate species, the Chihuahuan Meadowlark. Keen observers have

0:17.4

long known that the Chihuahuan Meadowlarkarks song sounds different from other North American meadowlarks.

0:23.9

Named after the northern region of Mexico where they're easy to find, Chihuahuan meadowlarks live in dry desert grasslands.

0:31.3

They form a distinct population in Mexico and the southwestern U.S.

0:35.5

They have a similar build to other meadowlarks, but with lighter brown streaks on their

0:40.3

sides and less yellow on their bellies.

0:43.2

And of course, a song all their own.

0:47.8

The Chihuahuan meadowlarks recognition as a species was aided by Joanna Beam, a PhD student

0:53.9

who studied the song patterns and

0:55.8

DNA of North America's meadowlark populations. The research suggested that song differences

1:02.0

could help prevent Chihuahuan meadowlarks from breeding with other species, and that

1:06.5

eastern and western meadowlarks are more closely related to each other than they are to the Chihuahuan birds.

1:17.4

Now, the Chihuahuan meadowlark has a name that recognizes the species' uniqueness

1:22.0

and that pays tribute to the desert landscapes that these birds call home.
