Summary

Chase Parham sits down with Fuller Smith to talk about his first year as head coach at Tarleton State, as the Texans won the WAC Tournament title. Tarleton isn't eligible for the postseason until next season because of the time limit after transferring to Division I. Smith played for the Rebels for two seasons (2007-2008) and returned as a member of the staff from 2011-2013, the first two as director of operations and then as an on-field assistant coach. good. Yeah, it was awesome. You know, our guys that competed. We had, you know, we had some ups and downs. We actually, you know,

won a lot of games this year in conference, one more than they ever have. And then, you know, we kind of had a lull towards the back half of the year. And I told you, I told the boys, man, It takes four or five games and you get hot in one week and you can do it.

seniors that wanted to go out, you know, on top and they just kind of refused to quit and they had a lot of belief, you know, a lot like the guys that I played with and coached with when I was at Ole Miss. And we just figured out a way to win it. It was a lot of fun, though. I could have never imagined it ending that way in the first year, but, you know, it's the same token. They,

they believed it was going to happen just like we believed it could happen, and, you know, they were able to get it done. Yeah, I'm going to kind of go back and forward on that. You mentioned that. I mean, toward the end of the regular season, I think you lost 9 of 11 there at one point directly into the conference tournament.

not eligible for the NCAA tournament,

when you have that type of negative run there late, losing like that,

and the conference tournament's getting there,

1:44.3

how did your guys sort of handle that?

1:46.1

Like, I mean, how did they stay with it?

1:47.3

Because, I mean, you know, you've got the conference tournament and there's a carrot. But what's sort of the day-to-day mindset that allowed you guys to sort of stay in it and not give in right there? Well, I just, you know, I think the biggest thing is we talked about, hey, you've already done a lot of things that have never been done before.
