Summary

Walking away from the faith is a phenomenon as old as humanity itself…but a recent “twist” has emerged in how some high-profile Christians choose to abandon their beliefs. Today, Todd attempts to school Carl on the cyber world of TikTok as the dynamic duo discusses one recent and disturbing “deconversion.” The two are talking about Abraham Piper; he’s the son of John Piper, the well-known pastor and founder of the ministry Desiring God. Abraham has attracted a lot of attention as he uses the big platforms of social media and prominent publications to spread his personal story, mock Christianity, and profit from it all. With Abraham being just one of several influencers to publicly “deconvert” here of late, what does it say about them…about us…about the faith in general, and our fascination with “Christian celebrities? Listen and weigh in on this tragic topic. Register for the opportunity to win a free copy of the fresh-off-the-press book, “Surviving Religion 101: Letters to a Christian Student on Keeping the Faith in College” by Michael Kruger. The copies are a generous gift from our friends at Crossway.

I am Todd Pruitt, pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Virginia, and I'm joined as always by Carl Truman, professor at Grove City College in Western Pennsylvania.

Now, today, one of the things that Carl and I have chatted about a little bit in recent weeks is the phenomenon, which has really been getting a lot of attention over the last couple of years, this phenomenon of Christian deconversions.

1:23.4

And Carl, you and I have texted back and forth a couple of times over the last few weeks about the latest well-known Christian de-convert, who is Abraham Piper, one of John and Noel Piper's sons.

1:38.1

And his story runs a little bit interesting.

1:42.1

He had kind of departed the faith when he was around 19 years old. About two

1:49.3

years later, he returned and was blogging about that, had spoken on the matter, had written

1:54.9

about it for various places, you know, in his return to the faith. And sometime, I don't know when, but sometime after that, he deconverted again and has

2:06.1

actually made quite a showing of it.

2:09.2

He's had several articles written about him on this.

2:12.6

I believe the Wall Street Journal wrote an article on him as well as some other major

sites because

2:18.0

obviously his father is well known, an enormous influencer among conservative Christians.

2:25.1

And so for the son of someone so well known to be so public about his deconversion and not

2:30.6

just public about his deconversion, Abraham Piper has been, I think he has around

2:35.0

a million followers now on TikTok. Now, Carl, I expect that to mean absolutely nothing to you.

2:42.0

I'm hugely impressed whatever that is. Sounds amazing. Yeah, TikTok is a social media platform,
