Summary

Did the apostle Paul really claim that the gospel had been proclaimed throughout the world? What could he have meant by such a statement? What about the Jews and how can he claim that the majority of Jews have not obeyed the gospel? Did most of them hear the gospel preached? Some would protest and think that Paul was obviously mistaken. In this sermon on Romans 10:18–21 titled “The Case of the Jews,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones looks at the connection between the Old Testament anticipation of the coming Messiah and the large-scale rejection of Jesus Christ by the Jews and also during Paul’s day. By interpreting Scripture with Scripture, Dr. Lloyd-Jones demonstrates how the Jewish people should have known about the suffering Messiah from their own Scriptures. The New Testament often assumes the clarity of the gospel in the Old Testament and yet there is a blindness to the clear teaching. The gospel from the apostle Paul was not a message that should be hidden from the masses. There was no hint of a “mystery religion” where only a select few knew the right details in order to be “initiated.” Dr. Lloyd-Jones contends that God was taking the gospel message through appointed apostles, prophets and preachers so that it would be heard by everyone, everywhere.

0:00.0	The words to which I would like to call your attention this evening are to be found in the Epistle to the Romans in Chapter 10, verses 18 to 21, in the 10th chapter of Paul's Epistle to the Romans.

0:58.8	Now, we come here to the final subsection of this tenth chapter of this epistle to the Romans.
1:07.9	We divided it up into these various subsections at the beginning and indicated then as I've had occasion to do since that here in these last verses the apostle sums up the whole argument of the entire chapter, and in particular, he sums up and finishes
1:32.3	what he's been saying in the immediate previous subsection. So that this is a very important
1:41.3	statement. You may remember that we indicated when we began this 10th chapter
1:46.7	that we regard it as a kind of ex-cursus, almost a digression, if you like. The main argument
1:56.6	of the apostle with respect to the jewels would in a sense be quite complete if we went from
2:03.2	the end of chapter 9 to the beginning of chapter 11. But as is his custom, he likes to put a case
2:10.6	fully and finally. And so he elaborates it. That's our view of this 10th chapter, that it is really an explanation and an exposition
2:20.3	of what he had been saying towards the end of the 9th chapter.
2:25.3	The main problem, of course, from the beginning of chapter 9 right on until the end of
2:31.3	chapter 11 is this peculiar case of the June. This astounding fact that our Lord, when he came into the world, came unto his own, and his own received him not.
2:44.7	But there were those who did, and those to whom he gave power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.
2:55.8	That's the theme with which the apostle is dealing.
