America was obviously formed to be united and in its name, but too often we were

You know, this is the problem of contempt in our culture, of polarization, of fighting each other. There's nothing new

about that. If you go down to the time, back to the time of the founders, you'll find that

Thomas Jefferson was sniping at John Adams, that there were people all over the place that were always doing this.

And what brought the country together was always a shared objective, a shared objective of something bigger than

ourselves. This is one of the reasons that the country really comes together in times of threat,

of crisis. You remember that I probably, and you're in my adult lifetime, there was nothing

that brought America together more than 9-11. I mean, holy cow, I mean, you could say it's like everybody's flying American flags.

And just the odd person out there that was not with it was very unusual, was a very unusual person.

We felt prouder to be Americans at a time when America was actually under attack.

So that's one way.

One way that we actually come together is we have a shared threat.
