Summary

The Last Jedi may be the most controversial film in the Star Wars series. While the movie has been critically acclaimed, many Star Wars fans have argued that the film violated canon in a number of ways, especially how it depicted Luke Skywalker. This week, I revisit my 2014 episode "The Canon," and I have a follow-up conversation with Rabbi Ben Newman about the state of the Star Wars canon. 0:10.6	about Dr. Who, which I'm really excited about, I've been working on it for a while.
0:14.4	And by from the next two episodes, I'm going to play you other stuff that I think you're

0:19.4	This week I'm revisiting an old episode from 2014 because it speaks to a debate which
0:24.5	has been raging in fandom this month, around the last Jedi, the new Star Wars movie.
0:29.9	And by the way, if you haven't seen the last Jedi, this episode will be full of spoilers.
0:35.6	Now I love the movie.
0:37.2	I mean, when the opening crawl came on, I was just giddy and I enjoyed every single minute

0:43.6	And then when I got home, I was surprised to discover how many fans were furious,
0:48.8	reventing on social media that they felt betrayed by the film.
0:52.1	Now, of course, there are a lot of trolls out there who just can't stand the fact that
0:55.9	the new trilogy features so many women and people of color.
0:59.8	But putting them aside, I've watched a lot of YouTube videos from fans in the US, the
1:04.4	UK, and Australia, who have legitimate gripes about the story and how it violates canon.
1:11.8	So issue number one is that Ryan Johnson, who wrote and directed the last Jedi, was not
1:17.0	really interested in the answers to all the mysteries that JJ Abrams had set up in
1:20.9	the previous film, The Force Awakens.
1:23.8	And spoiler alert.
1:25.7	Back in 2015, there was a ton of fan speculation about who Supreme Leader Snoke was.
