The Canary Islands are not named after canary birds.

There are no canaries in the Canary Islands.

The name actually comes from Latin. The Romans called the islands Canary Islands. The King Juba II of Moratania, which was an ancient kingdom that encompass much of

Northwest Africa, sent an expedition to the islands where they found a whole lot of dogs, and

hence got its name.

The problem is, there's never been any evidence found of dogs being on the islands

or any explanation of how they might have gotten there.
