Hello and welcome to We Are History. I'm Angela Barnes. And I'm John O'Farrell. You're leading on this one this week, John. I am. Because I'll be leading on next week's episode where we're going to be talking about quite a famous sort of invasion, battle, you know, soldiers and all that

sort of thing. But this week, John, you're going to be talking about women's suffrage.

Well, I felt that if you're doing war, then I get to do women and the feminist issues. You know,

I don't think it's my domain, but don't touch the barbecue,

okay? I'll just put it like that. The thing is, though, John, I mean, yes, we are discussing

women's suffrage today, which is very exciting, but you did have a particular angle you wanted

to come from, and that is the campaign against it. Basically, John wants us to hear more about why women shouldn't have got the vote.

I just thought this is a very interesting angle.

That's something that we completely take for granted that, yeah, women have the vote.

But people were organised and felt passionate about it and were vehemently against women to get in the vote.

Yeah, that's it.

I mean, you know, we get taught about particularly the suffragettes, a little bit about

the suffragists, but we don't really get taught about, well, what, you know, what they were

up against.

Exactly.

Why were they alarmed by the idea of women getting the vote?

What were their arguments?

How did they try and stop it happening? So, yeah, this week's podcast is about the campaign to stop women getting the vote.

And also, I always get into character when I talk about history.

So if I feel too passionate when I'm advocating, I'm just putting myself in their minds, Angela.

You understand that.
