| 0:44.4 | reading for this week. The story of the call of young Samuel. You know the story |
| 0:51.0 | well. The child who hears the voice of the Lord but doesn't fully understand. |

| 1:03.8 | prophecy in Israel after a long period of dormancy. It's a beautiful charming |
| 1:09.4 | story. I remember when I was going through the seminary it was often told in |
| 1:12.6 | connection with spiritual direction and discernment of vocation and so on. But |
| 1:17.5 | you know what? Once we know the backstory of this little tale, things get a little |
| 1:23.6 | more complicated, a little less romantic. And this story I think you'll agree |
| 1:29.4 | with me becomes surprisingly relevant to our times. What's the backstory? Well Eli |
| 1:37.9 | was the chief priest at the temple at Shiloh. Mind you this was before the |
| 1:43.6 | Jerusalem temple was built under Solomon who was David's son. So we're an |
| 1:48.5 | earlier version of the temple in Shiloh. Eli is supervising the work of his two |
| 1:54.3 | sons Finneus and Hoffney. Now Eli was, according to the Bible, a relatively |
| 2:01.2 | devout man but he was lazy and unfocused. And he was an especially bad |
