The story begins in Louisiana in the 1970s with a boy called James wildly in love with a girl called Darleen.

She was great. Right at five foot tall, blonde hair, ice blue eyes, the blue-est eyes you ever want to see in your life.

She was a very spirited girl. You might say we had been madly in love for quite a few years,

even when we were still in school we had been planning on getting married. And I had gotten a job

working on a drilling rig out in the Gulf of Mexico. You had to schedule phone time.

It was a very very awkward and the time you were allotted was very short. Like how long?

You could get maybe five minutes a week. So what's there with a particular telephone call that was

the most memorable? There was one that absolutely changed the course of my life.

I called her not realizing anything was wrong, just normal phone call. She proceeded to tell me that

she had changed her mind and did not want to get married and that she was sending the engagement ring

back to my house through the mail. Now she only lived about four miles away.

And she had asked me please not to try to contact her that she was moving.

Did she give an explanation as to why? I asked her repeatedly but she gave no reason other than

she had changed her mind and actually cut the phone call short. So it made it even that much worse.

Did you ever get to the bottom of it? Till this day I have no understanding at all what happened.

Did you ever see her again? I never did see her again. She moved and I didn't even know where.

That was the worst phone call of my life.

20 years passed and then one day a mutual friend contacted James. That was news.

She had come down with cancer and she had told that friend to pass on to me if she could

that she was sorry. She had wished things had worked out differently but even then

never did give a reason. So she passed away and I till this day never knew what happened.
