From the time Elmendorf, Texas began in 1885, the Ball family was right there earning money and lining their pockets.

Frank Ball began buying and selling farms, once he got cheap during the Depression, and opened up a general store that sold absolutely everything.

Alongside him was his wife Elizabeth and their eight children,

most of whom, with a very notable exception, became pillars of the community in their own rights.

That black sheep in the Ball family was second-born Joseph Douglas Ball, born January 7, 1896, who, despite his good start in the military,

came home and decided to, instead of being a politician, school trustee, or grocery shop owner like his other family members,

decided to go into a less than savory job as a bootlegger.

A job that, though it lacked the positive reputation, did earn him quite the substantial living.
