Welcome to another installment of HaysSys.

Of course, this year, we are using our HaysS series of episodes to highlight amazing black women as always, but this time

we are going to have a focus on money, business, and work. And on today's episode, we have

special guest Anna Gifty Apoku Ajiman, author of the book The Double Tax, How Women of Color

are overcharged and underpaid. And if you've heard of the

concept, and I think if you listen to this podcast you have, of massagin noir, this is a black

woman economist applying qualitative and quantitative research to that term. Is that a fair way to put

it? That is a perfect way to kind of label this conversation.

And what I found moving through this conversation was, and I was taking notes, Saeed,

I have the notes in front of me, is that as we're talking about this term double tax,

I find that how she discusses it references a lot of iconic texts that you bring up on the show a lot.

So double tax sounds a lot like Du Bois's double consciousness, which has a lot of parallels to it. She talks a lot about the house being on fire. If you see your neighbor's house on fire, you're not like, let me watch traitors and sit here. You go do something about it. And, like, of course, fire spreading the fire next time James Baldwin. And then there's another thing she says on the episode about the country and double taxes are about being taxed by another country.
