Happy Friday, podcast listeners. Hope you're well. I'm having half a day's holiday today. After I've done this,

I'm going to go and spend the afternoon with my wife because she's got the day off. She's tidying out

the garage because we've had a little bit of work done in there and it's a bit of a mess.

So she's tidying it all up. Seems to be a bit of that about at the minute.

There's a lot of that in the air.

The other week I was helping my father-in-law go through a load of stuff in his garage.

And, well, let's say there was a lot of junk.

We're talking old jam jars full of screws, nails, random bits of metal line around, and there

weren't even his. He inherited all this junk from his father-in-law. We used to go around carboot

sales, buying the stuff that everybody else knew they didn't need, and then didn't use it

himself. So when my father-in-law says to me the other week, do you want any of this? I'm like,

no, you are not passing the baton onto me. These screws have already been collected and ignored

by a minimum of three people, possibly four,

just bin them. But you could see he didn't really want to. He's been told all of his life

that throwing away things that, hey, might be useful, is wasteful.

But the thing is, the wasting was done years ago.

When my wife's granddad bought them without needing them,

the responsibility for all this junk is just being passed down,

like some rusty family heirloom and it stops with me.

And it's the same with beliefs, values, even bits of personality.

They get handed down until someone stops and says, do I actually want this?

We think of personality like something we've built ourselves, some carefully curated wardrobe.
