Summary

Zoltan Kesz is the Director of Operations at the Hungarian Civitas Institute, which promotes democracy, human rights, civil liberties and European integration, as well as the honorary president of the Free Market Foundation, which he helped to found. From February 2015 until 2018, he served as an independent Member of Parliament in Hungary, after he won a by-election, thereby depriving the Fidesz party of Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán of its two thirds supermajority.

In this eighth episode of the Brussels Report podcast, BrusselsReport.eu editor Pieter Cleppe discusses with him:

- The rule of law situation in Hungary

- Hungary’s relationship with China and Russia

- The influence of the EU and other European governments

- The economic challenges for Hungary

member of parliament from Hungary. And at the moment, he's the director of operations of the Civitas Institute,

0:40.1

as well as the honorary president of the Free Market Foundation in Hungary. So he's a real fighter

0:46.7

for liberty in Hungary. And I'm really delighted to have him with me here in this podcast because of course Hungary is on the forefront

1:34.3

1:50.4

Well, that was six years ago, unfortunately a long time ago, and that was a by-election

1:54.9

for one seat in my constituency.

1:57.9

And I decided to run as an independent, and I was supported by six parties, and I decided to run as an independent and I was supported by six parties and I managed

2:04.0

to defeat the pro-government or the governing parties candidate which at the time meant that they

2:10.2

didn't have a two-thirds majority anymore for three years only because after that in 2018 they

2:16.9

won again with a two-thirds majority and we are looking

2:21.1

at next year's election one one of the things that is in focus whether they will have another

2:27.4

two-thirds majority next year or not okay interesting well still quite a great accomplishment
