Summary

Fredrik Erixon is a Swedish economist and writer. He has been the Director of EU trade and economic policy think tank European Centre for International Political Economy (ECIPE) ever since its start in 2006. The Financial Times has ranked Erixon as one of the 30 most influential people in Brussels.

In this sixth episode of the Brussels Report Podcast, BrusselsReport.eu editor Pieter Cleppe discusses with him:

- EU "industrial" policy: what are the latest developments? Is the EU going in the wrong direction?

- EU trade success: what are the next big hurdles?

- The proposed EU  Digital Services Act (DSA) and  Digital Markets Act (DMA) and overall EU regulatory performance: Is the "better regulation" agenda dead at the EU level? Or is there still a lot of support for entrepreneurship-friendly regulation both in the EC and in national capitals?

- The EU after Brexit: how to save it from going the wrong way?

Welcome to the sixth episode of the Brussels Report podcast.

0:19.0

My name is Peter Klepper. I'm the editor of BrusselsReport.

0:23.8

I'm very happy today to have as my guest, Fredrik Erickson, who is the director of E. Saip.

0:33.7

E. Saip is a very influential think tank here in Brussels and in EU policy circles,

0:45.4

Frederick, the director in particular, he's also quite influential.

0:49.7

He was selected by the Financial Times as one of the most influential voices when it comes to trade

0:56.3

here in Brussels. So welcome, Frederick. Thanks, Peter. Thanks for having me and congratulations

1:03.4

on the launch of the podcast and Brussels report. Thank you. Thank you. I think it's going well and

1:09.2

and it's great to have you here, especially as a suite, perhaps as Sweden,

1:15.6

the one of the member states in the EU that is, let's say, still more in favor of free trade across the political spectrum, both the left and the right.

1:31.3

So I don't think it's a coincidence that you are from Sweden, but of course in every member state,

1:37.3

there are fighters for free trade that we can witness.

1:43.3

So let's start with something that has become, unfortunately,

1:48.3

I would say, more fashionable in Brussels and that is EU industrial policy. So in particular,

1:55.6

the French EU commissioner, Thierre Breton, is pushing for this. So perhaps could you shine your light on this?

2:04.0

I mean, what are the latest developments?

2:06.0

Because to a degree, the EU has always been pursuing some kind as something like an industrial

2:13.6

policy.

2:15.3

And do you think what is being proposed is going in the right direction or in the

2:20.8

wrong direction? Or are there perhaps at least some things that are good about it?
