Not much ever happened in the town of Everman, Texas.

It was just far away enough from Fort Worth to feel totally separated from the hustle and bustle of city life.

With little else to do, the teenagers of Everman drank and drove around in their cars,

and that was about it.

August 6, 1966, was a Saturday, and it promised yet another evening of little consequence.

16-year-old Edna Sullivan was wiling away the hot summer night with her boyfriend,

Robert Brand, and his cousin, Mark Dunham.

The trio loitered around a baseball field near the local high school,

listening to music and leaning against Robert's car, a 55 Ford.

They didn't really have a plan for the rest of the evening, but that was okay.

This was all they needed.

The teens eventually climbed into the car, chatting away without concern.

Their voices mingled with the sounds of the Texas night.

Crickets, wind through the grass.

Maybe even the distant laughs of other teens in the nearby streets.

But suddenly, Edna heard the sound of footsteps approaching behind them.

She turned around and saw a young man, a boy, maybe a few years older than her.

It was as if he appeared out of nowhere.
