It was a typically warm midsummer afternoon in 1966.

However, shortly after 3pm, a sound of gunshots rang out on a residential

street in Shepherds Bush, West London.

One of the guys got out of the car, come along and went bang, bang, bang. I don't think

it should be allowed in anywhere near the

public the judge at the time said that this was a heinous act there was a massive

public outcry three unarmed officers gunned down in broad daylight and quite

frankly should never be released from prison I mean a fugitive is always a wanted man

and they very quickly become a sort of folk hero and a folk devil at the same time.

pitches of wormwood scrubs on August 12, 1966. The residents on Braybrook Street in Shepard's

Bush were, for the most part, single-income families. As was common in the 1960s, the husbands in the family

worked. Some were employed at Wormwood Scrubs Prison, located less than half a mile away.

The sound of children laughing and playing filled the air that Friday afternoon, but was suddenly interrupted by gunfire,

drawing the attention of panic locals and youngsters who quickly fell silent.

Witnesses later described seeing a vehicle in the area, the blue 1954 vanguard estate.
