Summary

Picture yourself going to a ballpark as a kid. You remember how big everything felt, how you were just in awe of being so close to the players. That’s how 11-year-old Elyjah Blankenberg felt when he went to a spring training game between the Yankees and the Orioles, and he worked up the courage to get several autographs…including one from his favorite player, DJ LeMahieu. But the euphoria was short lived, when Elyjah lost his binder full of autographs…and nobody could find it. Ryan Hockensmith tells us the story of Elyjah’s lost treasures…and how the power of the internet rallied to help a young boy reclaim the magic of the game. Learn more about your ad choices. And that means that I have no idea where your story is generally begin.

So where are we today?

0:12.1

Well, this one began on March 19th in Sarasota, Florida.

It was a Yankees Orioles spring training game. Not exactly the Super Bowl,

0:25.0

but it was the Super Bowl for a kid named Elijah Blankenberg. He was an 11-year-old

How kind of intimidating is it for a kid who might be, as you said, super, super shy?

1:07.2

Well, getting autographs, it's a hockey scrum. And it is not a planned hockey scrum.

1:12.8

It is absolute mayhem a player pops out of the dugout or he doesn't. He just don't know who's

1:17.9

going to show up and when and for how long. There's nothing more heartbreaking than seeing a pack

1:24.3

of 25 kids swarmed to get an autograph from a baseball player. And then the player signs 11 and

1:30.8

then goes and stretches in the outfield. So the stakes are incredible because you just don't know

1:36.9

how long it's going to go. It's exciting, but it's also potentially heartbreaking.

1:45.4

So amid all of this jostling, all of this chaos, why is this 11 year old there in specific?

1:51.1

What's making him try his hand at this lottery? Well, he really, really wanted DJ La Mayhew's

1:57.9

autograph. Yes, DJ La Mayhew, the all-star utility man for the Yankees.

High fly ball, deep brake center, going back Hernandez, track long time game,
