On a hot summer day in August of 1872, seven-year-old George Pratt walked out the front door of his parents'

beachside South Boston home.

Seeking a reprieve from the blistering heat, the young boy was eager to soak his feet

in the cool ocean water.

George wandered the shoreline alone, gathering seashells.

His search was interrupted when an anxious 12-year-old boy

tapped George on the shelter.

The stranger explained that he was in a rush

and needed George's help running an errand.

But George was hesitant.

The other boy's demeanor was strange.

One of his eyes was cloudy.

Plus George didn't want to abandon the shells he had gathered.

The stranger promised the younger boy that he could store the shells in a nearby boat house.
