Ruben Carter, born in Clifton, New Jersey on May 6, 1937, as the fourth of seven children, would later admit to

having a troubled relationship with his strict disciplinarian of a father. Things only got rougher

when he was sentenced to a juvenile reformatory after stabbing a man that he claimed was trying

to sexually assault him when he was just 11. And in 1954, he escaped the facility and

enlisted in the U.S. Army. Just a few months after completing his basic training, Ruben was sent

off to West Germany where he picked up a sport that would forever change the course of his

entire life. Boxing.

Unfortunately, after four court-martials, Rubin was deemed unfit for service and was discharged in 1956 after just a few years in the military.
