Summary

When Elliott Long’s dad started planting a forest of “bottle trees” with trunks of steel and old bottles for leaves, Elliott immediately understood that one day, it would be his job to keep his dad’s forest alive. He wanted nothing to do with it. And then his dad died, and Elliott had a decision to make.

If you're driving through the Mojave Desert in California, going down a flat, dusty stretch of old Route 66, you'll see this place.

It sticks out like a sore thumb.

You're just driving along Route 66, and you see abandoned houses, non-abandoned houses, and then you kind of crest the hill and you see our place.

That stretch of the highways really fast, you're usually doing 80.

And so a lot of people will just rubberneck slow down and you'll see the dirt fly up down the road and they'll turn around and come back and take a look.

Elliot's place is the bottle tree ranch.

So imagine a little patch of forest,

except instead of real trees,

there are bottle trees,

tall steel trunks with glass bottles hanging off of them.

These are the leaves of the tree.

On sunny days, the bottles on the trees

glow green, blue, and brown. And when they're tickled by a gentle breeze, the trees come to life,

like a big wind chime. There's also a literal wind chime.

The sounds that are created between the whistles of the bottle tops, lots of spinners and windmills,

and the bottles clinking on the metal, it's a sound unlike nothing else.

It's loud, you can't hear somebody five feet in front of you at all.
