Summary

As temperatures begin to warm up and we start picturing the lazy park hangs and beach days in store for us this summer, our minds have already started whirring at the reading possibilities. Over the past year, we've turned to reading as both an escape from our current world and a way to explore without leaving home. While we'll be a bit more mobile this summer, our love for books hasn't changed, so we've once again tapped Jynne Dilling Martin associate publisher at Riverhead Books, and Lisa Lucas, senior vice president and publisher of Pantheon and Schocken Books, to help craft the ultimate summer reading list of books written by women. Whether you're itching for a Greek myth retelling, a workplace thriller, a deep dive into the natural world, or a novel about a cannibalistic food writer, we've got you covered.

Here's a full list of what we talked about:

This week, we're joined by two of our very, very favorite guests,

Gin Dilling Martin, Associate Publisher at Riverhead Books, and

Lisa Lucas, senior vice president and publisher of Pantheon and Shokken Books, to talk all things,

0:28.5

well, books. As usual, all of the book recommendations we're discussing today have been written

by women and will offer great company on trips big and small, hopefully as

0:38.7

you get back out there into the world this summer. Thank you so much for joining us, Lisa and

0:43.3

Jin. Thanks for having us again. This is always the most fun. Totally. So, it's so good to be back.

So as usual, I'm going to throw it to you, Jen, first. What has been one of your favorite books

0:56.1

to read recently? Okay. So Meredith, I think this will be especially up your alley. I hope. But

1:03.0

let me preface this by saying. So I have never as an adult stayed in America for an entire

1:10.1

calendar year, much less stayed in one place,

1:13.3

which has been the Catskills for a whole year. And it turns out what has happened to me is

1:18.0

I basically am becoming Ralph Waldo Emerson. And I apologize in advance for this. It's just,

1:23.6

it's the transformation that is underway. But like, when as an adult have you slept without an

1:28.9

alarm clock and just like woken up with the light every day? And it's gotten me very in the mood

1:35.1

for nature books. So my top book recommendation today is a book that's kind of like, I think

1:41.7

it's a sleeper cult classic. It's called Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer.

1:47.6

It is incredible.

1:48.9

She is a member of the Potawatomi Nation.
