Summary

In this episode, we tackle the raw and unfiltered Book of Judges. We step into an era where "there was no king in Israel" to see what happens when a society—and an individual—abandons prophetic boundaries and begins to substitute personal preference for divine law. The Pride Cycle: We analyze the text's relentless pattern of prosperity, pride, sin, suffering, supplication, and salvation. We look at why God preserves this cycle as a warning for our day. Gideon's Reduction: We explore why God reduced Gideon’s army from 32,000 down to just 300 men. We learn why the Lord intentionally puts us in positions where we cannot boast in our own strength. The Leadership of Deborah: We study the courage of Deborah and the unexpected heroism of Jael, illustrating how God raises up faithful individuals to do what others are too fearful to attempt. The Descent of Samson: We map out the tragic, literal "downward" geographical and spiritual journey of Samson, looking at how a man of such high potential fell victim to low achievement because of weak self-discipline. Doing Right in Our Own Eyes: We conclude with the sobering final verse of the book, confronting the modern trap of moral relativism and discovering why true freedom requires submitting to the King of Kings. Call-to-Action: Gideon needed a fleece to confirm his faith, but eventually had to move forward in the dark. What is a "strange strategy" the Lord is asking you to trust in your life right now? Let’s share our thoughts on overcoming personal spiritual cycles in the comments below. Hello, my friends. I'm Jared Halverson. This is Unshaken, and today we'll be covering the Book of Judges in the Old Testament. In some ways, this is the sequel of what we've studied

0:46.4

last week in the Book of Joshua. And in other ways, more than continuation, it might be

0:50.9

counterpart of the Book of Joshua. Because both Joshua and judges have to do with the conquest of Canaan,

0:57.0

but they each tell kind of a different story.

0:59.0

In the Book of Joshua, the conquest seems to be complete.

1:03.0

They've conquered the promised land. They've divvied everything up by way of land of inheritance.

1:07.0

And yeah, there might be a few wandering Canaanites here or there. They weren't able

1:12.3

to conquer Jerusalem from the Jebusites, for example. But for the most part, the promised land does

1:17.4

seem to have come into the possession of the House of Israel. Now, today in the book of judges,

1:23.1

it tells a bit of a different story. The conquest is far from complete. There seem to be

1:28.0

Canaanites all over the place and some challenges for the Israelites that those neighbors

1:33.9

present to them. If it were me teaching the Book of Judges, and I guess it is today, so you're

1:41.2

stuck with my perspective, if I were to make a Broadway musical about

1:46.0

the book of judges, not that anyone would, it would be probably too bloody for general

1:51.5

viewership, but I would, there'd be an amazing cast of characters, I'll say that much,

1:56.3

it would be both male and female leads, which is exciting. Some of them you are familiar with.

2:02.6

We'll get to hang out with Deborah today.
