My name is Finn Dwyer, and this is Garnica and the War in the North. Partisans Partisans, part six. Partisans which

looks at Irish stories from the Spanish Civil War was created by myself and Stuart Redden.

This podcast will see the war change gear and intensify.

As we saw on the last episode, Franco had failed in several attempts to take the city of

Madrid and now he will switch the focus of his attack to the anti-fascist zone along the north coast.

This will prove to be a very decisive and harrowing phase of the war.

While the Blueshirts and the international brigades had no direct involvement,

this podcast follows the story of the Dubliner Jack Prendergast, the only known Irish person

to fight in this theatre of war. We will also look at how what was known as the war in the north had an impact in Ireland and the wider world.

It witnessed the most notorious war crime prior to the Second World War, the bombing

of Gernica, an event that had far-reaching consequences. Indeed, it changed the very nature of warfare itself.

And this episode was researched by Stuart Redden and also relies on additional research by

Endomagari, Sam McGrath and Eiffa Francis.
