Chapter 7 and 8. In the previous chapters, Valency goes to see Dr. Trent in town about her heart trouble,

but before he can make his diagnosis, he receives a sudden call and rushes away to the train

station. More deflated than ever, she returns home,

where she briefly sees Barney Snaith,

a local recluse who is widely rumoured to be a villainous man.

Valency, however, doesn't seem to be able to believe it.

Valency finishes spending the rest of her gruelingly dull day with her mother and cousin,

then goes to bed in tears.
