In the previous chapters, Valenci had left an apologetic note for Barney before leaving to return to her family in Deerwood.

After explaining about her false diagnosis and Barney's secret wealth, a family were quite shocked,

but also selfishly eager that Valency should try to make amends with Barney as soon as possible.

Valency, however, was convinced that Barney would loathe her for her dishonesty and sank

into self-pity as she lay in bed in her old dull bedroom on Elm Street.

It was not until early afternoon the next day that a dreadful old car clanked up Elm Street

and stopped in front of the brick house.
