This is a podcast that explores the space where science and society collide.

We want to find out what's true, what's left to discover,

and why it matters. It's the end of the year, and in the U.S. at least, we're entering an election year.

So a lot of us are probably thinking about money.

After all, this is the time when we make our final tax deductible donations,

where maybe we buy gifts for our friends and family,

taking advantage of all the sales,

and where we take stock of how our finances are looking at the end of the year.

So that gets me to thinking about the last

time that the economy really failed miserably back in 2008 with the collapse of Lehman Brothers

that signaled the ushering in of a dark era in the economy. One of the consequences of all of

those collapses was a lack of trust in our institutions, in our financial

institutions. And so as a result, a person or a set of people with a pen name Satoshi Nakamoto

wrote a white paper that was made public in October of 2008, in which he, she, or they described a whole new way of thinking

about financial and other types of security, blockchain. I've been working on a series of

lectures for the great courses called How Technology is Shaping How We Think. We're going to go
