Hello and welcome to political thinking,

a conversation with, rather than a news interrogation of someone who shapes our political thinking about

what has shaped theirs.

My guess, yes, guess, plural this week. Or the Prime Minister and the Leader of the

opposition? No, not them. The people who did face each other across the

dispatch box so memorably almost a quarter of a century ago.

Tony Blair now Sir Tony and William Haig, Lord Haig, who now are cooperating, working together, publishing pamphlets

describing what they say should be the country's new national purpose, reimagining the role of the state, arguing that our future

depends on science and technology, making the right decisions about AI and biotech.

For those of you who still can remember

the bitter clashes in the House of Commons between

Tony, now Sir Tony Blair and William now Lord

Haig, let alone for those of us who spent our career reporting on those clashes.

It is some surprise to say, welcome both to political

thinking.
