Summary

An investigation into the Chicago Blackhawks, triggered by a lawsuit and allegations of sexual assault against a former video coach, have now turned the narrative around the team’s 2010 Stanley Cup victory on its head. The Athletic's Mark Lazerus, who has reported on former coach Brad Aldrich and his disturbing patterns of behavior, joins us to discuss the investigation, the player who has bravely come forward to tell his story, and all the ways the Blackhawks coaching staff and front office failed him. Plus: are there signs that hockey culture is finally changing?

How in your mind does this story stack up in terms of just how big it is and how big of an impact it could have.

2:08.0

I'm not sure there's been a comparable story. There's been sexual abuse scandals in hockey. It's an epidemic. Katie Strang has written extensively about it. I encourage anyone to go look at her archives to find stuff, but these things tend to happen at the junior level.

2:21.0

This is as far as I can remember, the first incident like this at the NHL level, usually your typical NHL scandal is it's bad stuff, racism and it's, you know, coaching physically abusing players or mentally abusing players and like, it's not good stuff in the NHL.

2:36.0

2:42.0

All right. Well, there is a lot to unpack here. So let's start with the guy at the center of it all. Mark, what can you tell us about Kyle Beach and his potential as a hockey player when he was first trying to break into the NHL back in 2010?

2:55.0
