Summary

DeRay, Sam, De'Ara, and Kaya tackle this week’s overlooked news, including poisoned baby powder, DC statehood, major strides in police reform, and school reopening issues. DeRay chats again with Johnetta Elzie about the current protest climate. Then, DeRay connects with journalist Soledad O'Brien, to discuss her new podcast and how race shapes our reception of media. Hey, this is Dere. Welcome to Potsy of the People in this episode. It's me, Sam, Kaya,

0:06.9

and DR talking about the news. And then we're joined by Soledad O'Brien, the one and only,

0:12.2

to talk about her new podcast and what's happening in the news writ large. And our special guest,

0:17.6

Janetta Elzy, to give us an update of what's going on in the protest today. Let's go.

0:24.3

So this has been, you know, it feels like every day is like a new year going on and

0:28.8

we are right in the middle of Pride. Pride is happening right now. And I'm always reminded

0:33.2

that the first Pride was actually a response to the police. But I wanted to just know how y'all

0:37.2

celebrate in Pride. What have you seen? How much pride? I went down to the village today and

0:42.4

there was not an official Pride parade, but there were lots of people out for Pride. The police had

0:48.2

blocked off some of the streets. And so there were rebalors marching and kind of hanging out.

0:56.1

And interestingly enough, many of them had Black Lives Matter sign or Black Trans Lives Matter

1:01.8

sign or gaze against guns. It was a very political Pride. And so you couldn't really tell if it was

1:08.1

Pride or protest. And then sort of a few blocks away, there were protesters who also had a lot of

1:13.6

Pride going on. And so there was just a lot of activity today, lots of people out in the village,

1:19.2

most of whom had on their masks. That's good. I, you know, as a nearly 40-year-old lesbian,

1:28.9

going out for Pride is not really a thing for me any longer. My fiance is going to have a heart

1:35.4

attack when she hears that, but it's a lot for me. So we actually went to the Rockaways today,

1:41.7

which I'd never been to before, which was very cute. But I think in terms of Pride, obviously,

1:48.4

celebrating Pride, I want to talk about the elections that happened this week with Richie Torres

1:54.1

and Sammy Nemeer Olavetes. And there's so many amazing people, queer Afro Latino men that are

2:01.3

perhaps going to Congress. We don't know for sure yet. But I think that's probably the biggest

2:05.4

Pride celebration for me this week is that for the first time, it's kind of crazy when you think
