And yet, he must return to the Dursleys. Year in, year out, even once Harry has left for Hogwarts and made friends with the likes of the Weasleys. In fact, in year four, after Harry returns from the maze, we know that Mali goes so far as to actually visit Dumbledore in his office to request that he comes straight to them for the summer instead of returning to the Dursleys, and Dumbledore refuses this request. She wouldn't ask him if you could come straight to us this summer, he said, but he wants you to go back to the Derslies, at least at first. Why? said Harry. She said Dumbledore's got his reasons. We will eventually learn what that reason is in Order of the Phoenix when Dumbledore finally

explains to Harry the ancient magic that he invoked when he was left on the Dersla's doorsteps

all those years ago, a special charm known as the bond of blood.

As long as Harry is able to call the Dursley's house home, he can't be harmed there.

I'll be in my bedroom, making no noise and pretending that I don't exist.

It's an interesting plot device that has some fascinating rules and limitations, but I think

we may have just discovered a power of the bond of blood charm that doesn't just protect Harry from attackers outside the house,
