And today we're going to be talking about 1996 Hollywood comedy, The Birdcage.

So we do have a couple of content warnings for this episode.

This episode features the use of a homophobic slur and swearing, both in quotes, although I, also the swearing may also exist just in me saying it. It also features mentions of homophobia and of the AIDS crisis. So you may be wondering why we have Irene here and not

Eli today. And the reason for that is that this is not the first time we've recorded this episode.

Unfortunately, the first recording with Eli and I had some audio issues. And so we now have

Irene in as a fresh set of eyes and ears to listen to me talk about the birdcage.

Yay!

And yeah, we may do this again in the future. I don't know.

We'll see how schedules line up and that kind of thing.

But anyway, so we are here to talk about the birdcage.

And so the birdcage is an adaptation of a 1978 French film, which is called,

and I apologize to French speakers across the globe, La Cage Alphal, which translates to The Crazy

Cage. Oh, okay, yes. Which itself was an adaptation of a 1973 stage play by the same name.

It was also then adapted into a musical in the US.

Oh really?

Yeah, and not only that, the French film actually spawned two sequels.

This was a weirdly successful thing.

Yeah, and so it's, yeah, it's kind of weird.

Like, you know, to those who claim Hollywood is obsessed with unnecessary sequels right now, clearly...
