Summary

In this episode of Talk Nerdy, Cara sits down with Dr. Lucy Jones, founder of the Dr. Lucy Jones Center for Science and Society and author of the new book, “The Big Ones: How Natural Disasters Have Shaped Us (and What We Can Do About Them)”. They just so happened to record on the morning of July 5, 2019, between the magnitude 6.4 foreshock on July 4 and the magnitude 7.1 earthquake on July 5, 2019, in Southern California. They discuss earthquake safety, seismology, and the psychological biases that prevent us from accurate risk assessment.

Hello everyone and welcome to talk nerdy today is Monday July 8th 2019 and I'm

0:18.0

your host Kara Santa Maria and I apologize that this episode went up a teeny tiny bit late.

That's honestly because I switched around my production schedule

0:26.6

to make sure that I could get you this episode in a timely way.

0:30.0

Long story short, super randomly, but I already had on the books an interview with Dr. Lucy Jones.

0:38.6

Now, she is a seismologist, she's also the founder of the Dr. Lucy Jones Center for Science and Society.

0:46.8

She is like the preeminent earthquake scientist.

0:51.8

She is a Los Angeles treasure, but also you have probably read quotes and

0:57.7

statements and even writings from Dr Lucy Jones all about earthquakes in the past if you've ever tried to look up on them.

1:04.8

She actually has a new book right now.

1:06.7

It's called The Big Ones, How Natural Disasters have shaped us and what we can do about them.

1:12.2

So I had a podcast on the books to record to talk about the new book

1:16.0

and then of course,

1:17.0

LA got slammed by earthquakes.

1:20.0

Now on July 4th, we got hit by a 5.4 magnitude earthquake, and we thought that this was our big

1:27.7

earthquake.

1:28.7

We now know that this was a foreshock for an even larger earthquake that happened yesterday, July 5th. On July 4th, I was actually in

1:38.7

bed when the earthquake happened and I only woke up to the very tail end of it.

1:43.0

There's another one in the morning of July 5th that I did not even feel that was a magnitude 5.

1:46.7

something.

1:47.7

And then the evening of July 5th, I was at a restaurant with a friend and we got hit by a 6.9 or 7.1.

1:55.0

It's so early at this point that I don't even know which is the appropriate magnitude.
