| 0:38.6 | Peace be with you. Friends, our first reading for this weekend is of pivotal |
| 0:45.2 | significance in the Bible because it lays out some of the fundamentals of human |
| 0:51.6 | anthropology. Who are we? And specifically human anthropology in regard to |
| 0:58.8 | marriage. So it's passage of, as I say, pivotal importance. So it behooves us to |
| 1:05.0 | take a careful and attentive walk through this passage. It's from the second |
| 1:11.5 | chapter of the book of Genesis. So those opening chapters of Genesis are always |
| 1:16.1 | so important. Here's the first line out from our reading. The Lord God says, |
| 1:21.5 | it is not good for the man to be alone. Now say what you want about the |
| 1:28.9 | biblical view of a human being. But the one thing you can't say is that it's |
| 1:32.9 | individualistic. The focus in the Bible is not as it is in the founding text of |
| 1:39.7 | modernity, for example, on the individual person and his rights. I mean, we |
| 1:45.2 | think that way. And we take it in with our mother's milk. I mean, this idea that |
| 1:50.1 | the individual and defending his rights. But that's just not the biblical view. |
| 1:54.8 | Rather, the Bible focuses on the human being as irreducibly social. It's not |
| 2:03.6 | good for the man to be alone. So I mean, connectivity, community, reaching out to |
