Summary

The National Library of Sweden is home to the largest medieval manuscript still in existence: an enormous, three-foot-tall Bible with an unusual portrait of the devil inside (along with a calendar, some spells, and a lengthy confession of the writer’s sins and temptations). Legend has it that it was created by a monk under duress over the course of one evening… with some supernatural help.

Hi, it's Dylan here with a small ask. So this is maybe a darker question to ask than we would

0:10.8

normally ask on this show. But over the years, the staff at Alpsipirah have talked about

0:18.6

this question of where might we spend our last days before the apocalypse?

0:24.2

Do we want to go somewhere far away and beautiful?

0:27.9

Do we want to stay close to home?

0:31.0

It's an interesting question.

0:32.0

It brings out a certain side of us that maybe we don't spend enough time thinking about. Anyway, tell us about

0:39.5

this place. Tell us about where you're going before the apocalypse. Give us a call at 315-992-7902.

0:46.4

And leave me a message telling me your name and your story. The mailbox will cut you off after a few

0:51.5

minutes, so call back in if you get disconnected. Or you can record a voice memo of any length and email it to us at hello atlasobscira.com. Go ahead and tell us what you're going to do before you can't do it anymore. Okay, on to the show.

1:12.1

Hi, Amanda. How are you doing?

1:13.7

Hey, Dylan. Good. So today I want to tell you a story about a book. It's a very special book. It's called the Codex Gigas, which is Latin for big book.

1:23.8

Okay. But before I get into what it is and what's in it, I want to tell you a little bit of a story about how it was made. Okay. But before I get into what it is, what's in it, I want to tell you a little bit of a story about how it was made. A legend, if you will, a fantastical tale.

1:35.1

Okay. This is a book with a backstory.

1:37.7

So imagine for a minute that you are a monk. In medieval times, the year is, you know, 1,200 or something. We're in the middle ages,

1:47.0

in Europe, specifically in Bohemia, which is now like where the Czech Republic is. But you are

1:51.8

actually in deep trouble at work. So your monastery has very, very strict rules. And you

1:57.8

broke the rules doing something. I'm probably a chabby monk. I feel like I'd be like not a good

2:03.4

monk. Okay. So this is a- Dylan the shabby. Yeah, I buy this. Dillin the shabby. Correct. Exactly. So what are

2:08.6

I done? I don't know. So you're in trouble. I don't know what you've done. Maybe you like stole a

2:12.5

donut or something from the cafeteria or you like farted in church or something like something bad sounds right happened and while you're facing a very serious punishment which is the other monks at the abbey

2:23.2

are going to actually enclose you into a wall that is bad that's that's pretty harsh okay
