I'm Brian Hyatt. This is Rolling Stone Music Now. So these are always some of the most fun

episodes to do over the next couple weeks. I've got episodes coming looking back at the

music you may have missed in 2023 and I get to have Rolling

Stones great staff on and share some of the best music they heard and some of

it ends up being new to me and some of it is just a reminder of the stuff I loved so again it's always really fun.

So we're going to break these down by genre and we're going to start out today with indie rock.

To do so I have with me Angie Martosio, John Dolan, and Simon Vosic Levenson.

Simon I know you had some thoughts on this year overall.

I think we could start by just saying that I think 2023 was a really strong year for indie rock.

It's a genre that people sometimes wonder is it still going to still have new things to say

and I think we saw this past year that the answer is yes absolutely my two favorite

albums of last year were both strong indie rock releases that's not always the

case but I think it was a really good year it seemed for a little bit especially during

COVID that indie rock got hit especially hard because it's a live,

it's an especially live medium based on bands touring and bands being in rooms together and playing

guitars together and it seemed like it took a little bit of a dip during that time and I think this was the first year where I felt like it was just a like Simon says it's really strong like when we were going to try to get to 40 albums it was like we could have gone I kept finding ones later all we should have done that we should

have done this because there were so many good ones coming out the thousand best indie rock

that's right of 2023. Simon why don't we start with you said the two of your

favorite albums of the year period were

indie rock?

That's a strong statement, so let's maybe start with those albums.
